International women's day 2022

Join Isuroon on March 8th, 2022 in honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day!

Online conference

Isuroon is a Somali, women led, impact organization in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since 2018, we have gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day and recognize women of African Descent.
In 2022, we are opening the conversation of what is really equity and how to elevate it behind superficial public statements into cultural change. We are continuing our advocacy for the reform of child protection services, which destroy many Somali families.
For the first time, we are connecting with women from Kenya and Ghana and bringing Women of African Descent together.

Enough for everyone

Keynote Speaker

Michelle Benson

Senator - State of Minnesota

Michelle Benson was raised on a family farm in the western Minnesota community of Murdock where her family still farms today. Growing up she learned the value of hard work and personal responsibility. Her work ethic and determined attitude led her to graduate with a B.A. in chemistry from St. Catherine University in Saint Paul and later with an M.B.A from the University of St. Thomas.

Michelle is a CPA and has done an audit and consulting work at Deloitte, as well as being the executive director at the Upper Midwest Security Alliance. Her experience as an auditor and accountant has made her excellent at exposing unnecessary waste, fraud, and abuse.

Michelle is also very active in her community. Her belief that all children deserve the right to life led her to volunteer at Birthright, an organization dedicated to giving women support through difficult pregnancies.

In the Senate, she has been a leader in lowering health care costs, protecting individual privacy rights, and exposing government waste. She has chaired the powerful Senate Health & Human Services Committee since 2017. In that capacity, she has stopped harmful legislation to mandate vaccinations, allow abortion up until birth, and implement socialized medicine.

I wake up every day thinking of new ways to help improve the quality of life for Somali/African women and their families. Serving others is my calling and I do so by leading as a coach, advocate and caregiver.

In my life, I have three important identities – I am a black African, I am an immigrant and I am a Muslim woman. For many in society, I am placed at the bottom of the barrel. However, I believe that each of these identities gives me big advantage and strength that make me who I am.
